FAQ: Which Sign Level Class Do I Register For?

This is a complicated question to answer.  It depends on both your Expressive and Receptive Sign Skills and which sign language you use most.

Do you use ASL or Signed English to communicate in a social setting?  Do you use PSE, MCE, SE or SEE in an educational environment?  How many signs do you know?

The online classes follow the lessons in the appropriate level SEE Student Workbooks.  You can expect to learn approximately 1 lesson per week for each 4 or 6 week session.  That means you will learn at least 30 words per week for the Beginner sessions and 30-50 words for the Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Beginner Levels - Student Workbook (720 words) for 6 week sessions:

Beg 1 = Lessons   1- 6  (180 words)

Beg 2 = Lessons  7-12 (180 words)

Beg 3 = Lessons 12-18 (180 words)

Beg 4 = Lessons 19-24 (180 words)

So, how many words do you know?  Take a wild guess.

Do you know more than 720 words?  Then proceed to the next level.

Advanced Beginner Levels:  More Signing Fun Workbook (600 words)

MSF 1 =  Units 1-4  (150 words)

MSF 2 =  Units 5-8  (150 words)

MSF 3 = Units 9-12 (150 words)

MSF 4 = Units 13-16 (150 words)

More Signing with Carol (New Curriculum)

There are more than 400 sign families in the Signing Exact English dictionary.  This class will help you expand your sign vocabulary through the use of "Sign Families".   These words are grouped together due to similar meaning and/or movement. For example;  CLASS as the head of the family, with the following as members of this family... bunch, department, family, group, herd, league, organize and team.

Intermediate Levels learn more words and use practice stories to increase interpreting speed.

Advanced Levels are for fluent SEE signers who know 1500+ words and want to increase fluency and be more expressive.

So does this answer your question as to which level you want to register for an online class?

If you are still unsure, sign up for a level based on the number of words you know and when you attend your first class, you can decide if that is the correct level for your signing ability.  We are flexible if you want to change to a different level.

Hope to hear from you soon!
